As we discussed last month, we believe more providers will engage in value-based care contracts as a result of COVID-19. Amidst the changes they’re already facing, we know providers are struggling to bring patients back in, whether in-person or virtually, via telehealth visits. Despite the challenges, this could be a keen opportunity to support providers in adopting programs geared towards value-based success.
If you’ve read our white paper, How a Phased Approach to Value-Based Care Works, you’ll know that provider engagement is perhaps the biggest barrier to implementing a value-based reimbursement program. So how do we meet providers where they are, and support them to succeed in value-based care?
Engaging providers and ensuring a successful transition to value-based care involves not only the right tools and technology, but also a strong understanding of organizational culture and processes.
At Geneia, we’re well aware of the prevalence of physician misery and burnout of physician misery and burnout. How can we expect patients to engage when their providers do not? This awareness informs each step in our process to support provider adoption. As we noted in our white paper, Selecting the Right Analytics to Build Physician Adoption and Trust, we also recognize that one of the primary challenges providers face is the feeling that they do not have the right tools to succeed in value-based programs. As such, our approach to help providers is built on the following principles:
- Listen. Ensure providers know they have been heard during the process.
- Invest in time-savers for providers. Enable efficient workflows through pre-visit planning, pre-visit lab testing, and care team huddles.
- Empower the care team. Given the right tools, and the right information at the right time, the care team and administrative staff are equipped to identify patients at risk, coordinate care, manage open care gaps, and motivate and engage patients in their care.
- Providers need more time and resources. Acknowledge that providers are caring for patients with complex healthcare needs. Giving them more face-to-face time with patients is critical.
- Consider a phased approach that prioritizes early wins for providers.
- Training is not “one-and-done”. Adoption does not magically occur once implementation has been completed. Providers must be able to sustain the changes to support the program.
Like many of our health plan clients, and as noted above, providers can also benefit immensely from a phased approach to value-based care. Our method for helping providers make the shift encompasses fives key areas to drive adoption of new processes with new and/or existing technology:
- Align vision with organizational goals and objectives.
- Engage providers in decisions and activities throughout the process.
- Design a targeted strategy to drive efficient provider use of technology to meet value-based goals.
- Educate through tailored, user-focused training.
- Sustain program adoption for continued success.
